Special wedding dances are a timeless tradition that can create beautiful memories to cherish. But while traditions should be honored, your wedding is uniquely yours. You should select dances and music that help you express your own style.

First Dance

For the wedding couple’s first dance, a romantic slow dance is the tradition, and it’s a good choice if you or your beloved doesn’t feel comfortable on the dance floor. All you have to do is hold each other lovingly and sway.

But if you love to dance, you could try a more upbeat choice. If you love to dance, the first dance is your chance to show off your moves, and your guests will love to see the two of you let loose. Work with your wedding DJ to select a song that expresses who you are together.

Parents’ Dances

Traditionally, the bride dances first with her father, the groom with his mother, and then the new in-laws step in. Yet, today’s families are more diverse than ever, and you may have stepparents, grandparents or other parent figures you wish to honor with a dance.

To avoid a long, drawn-out dance, you might want to arrange with your loved ones to cut in at a certain moment of the song. Or, surprise them by pulling them onto the dance floor. Your DJ can create a medley of songs that fits each person.

Cultural Dances

Many couples these days enjoy incorporating their heritage or ethnic identity into the wedding dance. Jewish couples will want to dance the hora, and those of Italian heritage might do the tarantella. Irish and Scottish couples may include the Ceilidh dance.

Many cultures observe the tradition of the money dance, in which the guests offer cash to dance with the bride and sometimes the groom. The details differ, but sometimes the money is pinned to the bride’s dress, placed in her shoes, or placed in an apron

Whatever special dances you decide to use in your wedding, feel free to change the traditions to suit your own personal taste. Your dances should honor the past but also set the tone for the future. A wedding marks the beginning of your life partnership, and music and dance become part of that story.
