Prom is supposed to be a major highlight in a student’s high school experience. It can only be that way if you can pull together a successful, exciting, engaging event though. That’s easier said than done, especially when you’re trying to cater to the sometimes eclectic tastes of teens. You can do it with the right organization though.

Organize Your Committee

The first thing to do when planning prom is to organize your prom committee. You should have about 10-15 reliable people who are enthusiastic about putting together a fantastic event. Each committee member should oversee an aspect of the event, from planning it to rolling it out so everything goes smoothly. Remember to give everyone a budget to work within, saving some extra on the side to cover any unexpected expenses that may come up.

Work Out the Logistics

There are plenty of logistics that go into planning a successful prom event. Start by picking a date, time, and location (in that order). Try to avoid holidays or days when other schools have prominent events. Remember to consider how many people will likely attend when choosing your venue so there’s enough room for everyone. Once you have that sorted, it’s time to pick a theme. The right theme can elevate any dance, especially prom. Themes like The Great Gatsby, Red Carpet, Paris, Italy, New York City, Fire and Ice, or Enchanted Forest can all be a ton of fun to plan around.

Pick the Entertainment

While much of prom revolves around dancing, you don’t have to leave it at just that (though you should absolutely make sure you have killer music and an awesome DJ). Plan out how the venue will be lit. Will you have a photo booth? How will you style it? Are you bringing guest entertainers? Guest entertainment is a fantastic way to make prom more interesting and lean into your theme more for an even more memorable night.

While you’re at it, remember to include a refreshment menu. Light snacks and beverages offer prom-goers an opportunity to step away from the dancing if desired and, well, refresh themselves. Remember to advertise the event well too. It’s up to you whether you choose to create posters, send out emails, design t-shirts, or print off actual invitations to be handed out.
