Dancing is one of the main attractions at a wedding reception, and for good reason. It allows you to interact with more of your guests, and it is incredibly fun. When planning your wedding reception, there are some things that you can do to make sure that you optimize the space to allow dancing to flow easily.

Keep the Open Space Central

The open space that you use for dancing needs to be at the center of your layout. In order for people to get more involved in dancing, you need to make it easy to access, and you need to make it seem like the most attractive option. If people see others having fun on the dance floor, they are more likely to join in. Additionally, you will use that space for other things, like cutting the cake, your first dance, and any other parts of the program that you want other people to pay attention to. Having it in an easily viewed and accessible area will make it easier to keep everyone’s attention and allow you to have your moment front and center.

Put the Bar Near the Dance Floor

Wedding guests love the bar. Whether you have alcohol, fancy drinks, or even just soda, many people find it easier to socialize when they have something to drink in their hand, and the bar tends to be a popular place. Putting the bar near the dance floor will require people to either cross the floor or cross near the floor, which will encourage them to join the dancing. It will also make it easier for you to grab your friends. Plus you won’t have to worry about wending your way across the room in order to catch your breath and refresh yourself while dancing. It keeps everything flowing seamlessly.

Ditch the Seating Chart

While seating charts can be useful for a variety of reasons, they can also make it more difficult to socialize with a variety of people, and they can make some of your more shy guests much less likely to take to the dance floor. Make sure you have the head table and space set aside for your families, and then let the rest of the guests fill in where they may. You’ll find that people are more likely to take to the dance floor, and it will leave seats for tired dancers to take a break in, without worrying that they are encroaching on someone else’s space.

Setting up a good layout is one of the keys to encouraging people to dance. If it doesn’t seem like there is the right space for dancing, it won’t happen even with the best music. Keep this in mind and allow it to guide your layout decisions.
